Badrinath Yatra
Badrinath is situated in the lap of Nar-Narayan Parvat, with the towering Neelkanth peak (6,597 meters) in the background. Also known as Vishal Badri, it is the largest among the five Badris and is revered as a tribute to Lord Vishnu.
History and Significance
Adi Guru Shankaracharya established Badrinath as one of the four pilgrimage centers (Char Dham) in India, alongside Rameshwaram in the south, Dwarkapuri in the west, and Jagannath Puri in the east. Situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters, Badrinath is among the most sacred Hindu sites.
The area was once covered with wild berries, leading to its name 'Badri Van' (forest of berries). The temple, originally built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, has undergone multiple renovations due to damage from avalanches. In the 19th century, it was restored by the royal families of Scindia and Holkar.
Badrinath Temple Architecture
The temple features a colorful and imposing entrance known as 'Singhdwar.' Inside, the main deity, Lord Badri Narayan (Vishnu), is enshrined in a meditative pose.
Best Time to Visit
Badrinath Temple is open from late April or early May until late October or early November, depending on the Hindu calendar and weather conditions.
Winter Seat of Badrinath
During winter, the idol of Lord Badrinath is moved to Narasimha Temple in Joshimath for worship until the reopening of the temple.
